Ferrari formula one – the pinnacle of controversy
We can call Ferrari the most experienced and established team in Formula 1. However, Ferrari is better known as the most controversial team in the Formula 1 due to the immense amount of controversies the team has been associated with in its 61 year old career.
The team is currently in 3rd place in the constructors’ standings even though they have a pretty good car this season. But one cannot blame the team for this downfall as Felipe Massa has been the main reason for Ferrari’s downfall in the constructors’
standings this season and clearly, he is not the same driver he used to be before his accident in the 2009 Championship.
Yes, Ferrari is the most legendary team statistically in the history of Formula 1 but numbers are not as simple as they seem. During Ferrari’s peak time with Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, the team won 5 consecutive titles, both drivers and constructors,
giving them a record breaking championship streak.
Ferrari was defeated by a new entry in the sport, who took a team from the ground to the sky. Fernando Alonso driving in Renault was the only person to defeat Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari before he retired in 2006. Not just once, but the Spaniard managed
to beat Ferrari twice in his Renault securing both drivers’ and constructors’ titles for his team.
Moving on, Ferrari’s secret recipe for securing championships was never a secret as everyone was aware that Ferrari won the titles only because Rubens Barrichello strangely agreed to be Michael’s wingman and supported him fully.
The only reason why team orders were banned was that Ferrari was misusing this facility and the FIA decided to monitor the team radios from that point. It was back in 2004 when Rubens Barrichello braked in the middle of the track to let Michael pass through
to take the win. And no, he did not do it because Michael was leading the championship. He was forced to do it so that the 7-time World Champion can increase his lead even further.
How can Ferrari do such a thing and get away with it?
On top of that, Rubens decided to stay with the team for 5 years and kept his mouth shut about it. Rubens looked like a 40-year old child when he says that he ruined his career with Ferrari. It was his own fault. He should have at least talked to the team
or the media about it instead of trying to be s****. Doo and solving the mystery by himself.
Secondly, a man’s dignity is more important than anything else in the World and Rubens should have realized that. He could have been the number 1 driver for Ferrari but he did not step up and claim his throne.
Meanwhile, Michael was enjoying undeserved victories day in, day out and there is no reason why he should not do so. Ferrari has won more championships by unsporting means rather than using their drivers and team’s skills. This is not how any sport is supposed
to be and this is the kind of attitude that is draining the worth of every sport down the drain. Yes it is a competition, but it is supposed to be bring out the best in competitors not the worst.
The record breaking 2004 season was the most unsporting season in the history of Formula 1. The reason is that Ferrari kept winning and winning with humongous leads and pointless domination. It seemed that the rest of teams were working on playing ping pong
rather than working on their cars that year.
Nonetheless, Ferrari is a good team. But their approach of winning is totally against the spirit of the sport and the FIA should at least try to maintain the sport’s standards striclty.
