Ferrari give up aggressive exhaust system for more conventional one – Formula 1 news
Ferrari technical director, Pat Fry pinpoints that the team’s idea for an aggressive exhaust system in the F2012 for the upcoming 2012 season starting at Melbourne in Australia, did not work well and the team have decided to go use a more conventional system
in the new car for the forthcoming season.
Fry admitted, “We started off with an exhaust system configuration that was particularly aggressive, but after last week’s test, it was clear this solution still required a lot of development before it could be used in a race. We opted for a more conventional
configuration. Obviously, having developed the car to suit this innovative exhaust concept, now we must re-optimise everything in just the few days left before Australia. There aren’t major differences between the two systems in terms of performance, but we
really need to analyse everything in detail.”
Ferrari had been struggling with the new car in all the pre-season tests until now. However, the team is still hopeful after doing the test run in Barcelona for two days.
The team had stated that the new car had passed the reliability test as it completed over 100 laps during the first two days of the final test held at Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.
Moreover, Fernando Alonso remained the busiest man on track and completed 125 laps during the day while Felipe Massa completed 105 laps on the previous day.
Fry said that there would be new components coming for the car and the team would try its best to make the best possible configuration for the car to make significant improvements in order to get ready for the forthcoming season. The idea of new parts came
after the evaluation of the aerodynamics on the second day of the third test concerning mainly with the front wing.
Furthermore, he believed that the team was doing reasonably well while he said that there is no doubt that the difference of less than a second matters in the race but we had been driving with 60 kilos of fuel too.
Nevertheless, he said that the team still have a lot of work to do to make the considerable preparations for the forthcoming season.
