Ferrari hoping to catch up with McLaren in the constructors’ standings – Formula 1 news
Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has recently confirmed that the team is not going to develop its 2011 car anymore and they are going to try to shift their focus on 2012.
However, he claims that the team is still going to challenge McLaren for the 2nd place in the constructors’ standings this year in order to finish the 2011 season solidly.
“The Prancing Horse is trailing second placed McLaren by 71 points in the Constructors' Championship and catching the English team is a mathematical possibility. In addition, the remaining races will also provide a very useful test bed for some elements
that could be used on the 2012 car,” according to a statement on Ferrari’s website.
The team has not been able to perform well in the constructors’ standings mainly because of the fact that Massa is struggling to perform and without his support, Fernando Alonso cannot do much in terms of constructors’ performance.
However, the Spaniard is doing pretty good in the drivers’ standings as he is in 2nd place which proves that Felipe Massa is the one who is struggling to perform and that their car is not as weak as it looks like.
“While next year's car is now the main focus of attention for the designers, this year's 150º Italia will be sporting a few aero updates, mainly around the rear wing; these modifications having been planned before the aero department switched its attention
entirely to next year,” Domenicali added.
With some minor upgrades in the pipeline for the 2011 Ferrari car, the team is hoping of breaking the habit and probably producing a championship-winning car for the 2012 Formula 1 season. The team has not been able to win a single title since 2007 when
Kimi Raikkonen secured the title for the team.
The competition in Formula 1 is also getting quite tough now and it seems that the drivers need to be at their best consistently in order to defeat their respective rivals.
