Ferrari is assured Alonso could have fought for victory in Canadian GP – Formula 1 News
Ferrari is certain that Fernando Alonso would have made life difficult for Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel during the Canadian GP, had the former driver qualified higher on the grid.
According to the Ferrari team principal, Stefano Domenicali, “I believe if Fernando had been on the first row like Sebastian then it would have been a different story. The main difference was that everyone,
I believe, thought that the super soft was the tyre for the race, but because the temperature was higher, then it was the other way around.”
Compared to the previous season, the Italian squad has taken a huge step forward. Both their drivers, Alonso and Felipe Massa, have been able to fight for podiums with consistency but they have not enjoyed
much luck until now.
However, there are a lot of races remaining in the season and things will definitely become a lot more interesting after the end of the European rounds. It seems like Red Bull and Mercedes is strong in
terms of qualifying speed but it is dependent on track conditions, when it comes to race pace.
On the other hand, Ferrari has been unable to challenge their rivals in qualifying, which has hurt them to a great extent.
Domenicali realises that fact and added, “Of course this [improving qualifying] is a need for us because if you start behind you are not able to attack. Unfortunately it is a very easy thing to say but
a very difficult thing to do.”
At the moment, Ferrari is number two in the Constructor’s Championship and they need some solid performances from both their drivers in order to challenge the reigning world champions.
Although, Alonso has been scoring points with consistency, his team-mate Massa has struggled in the past couple of events. The Brazilian crashed twice during the Monaco GP weekend whereas banged into the
tyre wall in the Canadian GP qualifiers too. As a result, he has been unable to threaten the top runners, which has been costly for the team.
However, the next few races will once again provide a chance to the Ferrari duo to bounce back strongly, as they will be in better shape compared to the rival teams.
