Ferrari looks to copy Mercedes Double DRS System – Formula 1 news
Ferrari are looking to copy Mercedes Double DRS system now that the FIA has deemed it legal.
Mercedes have come up with a Double DRS System that was the target of much controversy as teams called it illegal. Red Bull and Lotus were the two teams who expressed their concerns over the innovation.
FIA though recently has finally given its verdict on it and has deemed it legal. After the Chinese Grand Prix where Nico Rosberg was victorious it was evident that the Mercedes pace was something to look into and teams like Ferrari Red Bull and McLaren will
want to have the same design in order to generate more pace. Especially when the tracks ahead will have long stretches and the pace will play an important role.
Technical director for Lotus James Allison led the protest against the Double DRS System but it was in vain as it has been clarified as legal. Allison admitted that now teams will look to introduce a similar system.
He said that they will need to decide on whether or not the opportunity cost of keeping that system is higher than the development of the things they have in mind otherwise. It is a situation that Mercedes will be looking into as well.
Ferrari technical director Pat Fry talked about the system and said, “It's not just a case of applying it to our current aerodynamic characteristic, it's then trying to exploit it further after that, so I expect there will be a two-fold thing: we will know
instantly - or we know instantly - what it's worth in terms of lap time and we can weigh that up in the cost performance and the effort needed. And then we also need to look at what's the ultimate potential of that device. We've been looking at it for a month
or two. Now it's clear we can at least start working for sure, weighing up everything properly.”
It will be interesting to see which team goes for the Double DRS System and how well they formulate it. If grid leaders like McLaren and Red Bull are able to come up with a similar design it may make life difficult for other teams.
