Ferrari need consistent development to maintain their lead in drivers’ championship
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has efficiently reduced the expected damage for his team in the 2012 Formula 1 season so far and is leading the drivers’ championship with 164 points ahead of Red Bull Racing drivers, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel.
The Scarlet team has not been able to develop the most competent car as they had the most difficult pre-season this year. Although, they came up with some superb step-ups after the Mugello test, however, they still need to make some considerable advancement
so as to maintain their lead in the drivers’ rankings.
The Spaniard is the only driver in the season so far who has achieved three grands prix victories. However, it is often said that the two-time world champion has won only when there happened to be something unfavourable on track. For instance, he took an
amazing victory in the Malaysian GP which was held at Sepang International Circuit ahead of Sergio Perez of Sauber in the wet weather conditions.
Moreover, he scored his second win of the current season in the European GP in which Sebastian Vettel’s alternator was failed. Nevertheless, these critiques cannot be brought into reality as he dominated throughout the weekend of German GP and claimed victory
after securing the pole position.
It will be important to mention that recently, the technical director of Ferrari, Pat Fry has said that the weather conditions have helped in scoring points in the season until now and they have optimised the opportunities during the rainy conditions.
"Obviously, if it had been a completely dry race in Malaysia, it would have been a different story," Fry said. "I don't think we can hide behind the fact that weather has helped us out. Do I think we're the quickest in a dry qualifying? I don't think we
are now, but in last two wet sessions [Silverstone and Hockenheim] it has been more impressive."
Furthermore, he said that they set off with quite an incompetent car, however, they managed to make the most out of the provided circumstances and they are very much pleased with the performance of their driver who has a strong lead over all the other contenders.
Over and above, he still insisted that they must keep on improving the pace of their car so as to secure more competitive results in the remaining nine races of the season after the summer break.
In addition, he said that they need to enhance their performance in dry conditions too in order to secure a competitive position in this year’s championship.
"We just need to keep working at it. They've got to go and make the most of it,” he said. “Yes, we were helped by the weather, but then why didn't other people take advantage of it?"
At present, the Italian team is standing at fourth place in the constructors’ championship with 189 points. Moreover, they are ahead of Mercedes and are behind their main rival Lotus.
Above and beyond, their team principal, Stefano Domenicali has said that they are trying their best to make the significant progress for the upcoming races.
Additionally, it is very hard to project about the future and there will be a tough fight amongst the teams in the front which include Red Bull, McLaren, Lotus and Ferrari.
Let’s see how they all come up after the August break.
