Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo overwhelmed by first victory of 2011 season – Formula 1
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has termed Fernando Alonso’s British Grand Prix triumph as very emotional for the team since it came after ten races.
“Hearing the Italian National Anthem being played at Silverstone, the same venue at which we won our first ever Formula 1 race, was something I found particularly emotional. This is Ferrari, a team that never stops fighting, never throws in the towel, at
the top level for sixty years,” di Montezemolo said.
Ferrari scored the last win at the 2010 Korean Grand Prix after which Fernando Alonso led the championship until the final race of the season.
Since the beginning of the 2011 Formula 1 season, the team has been unable to give a good performance and it seemed that the team’s pace was nowhere near McLaren or Red Bull Racing. Especially at the Spanish Grand Prix, where Alonso led the race for most
of the time, the Spaniard ended up a lap behind the two leaders of the race, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
Nevertheless after securing an astounding victory this past weekend, the Spaniard drove around the track in a 1951 Ferrari 375 which was the team’s first championship winning car.
Di Montezemolo stated after this long awaited victory that scoring such a win on such a historic track was quite overwhelming for them and it was the perfect reward for the team’s hard work throughout the season.
“I want to thank [team principal Stefano] Domenicali and the whole team, both those at the track, who did a perfect job today and those at home, whom I'd asked to put in a huge effort, not just for us but also for our fans. Fernando was brilliant, driving
an extraordinary race and Felipe [Massa] also did very well, fighting right to the very end,” said the president of Ferrari.
The upcoming races of the season are now going to become even more interesting and it seems that Ferrari will now aim for nothing more than a victory at the remaining venues of the season.
