Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo praises Fernando Alonso – Formula 1 news
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has praised the performance of the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso who is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 76 points and he is 3 points ahead of Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
Even though, Ferrari struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme and expressed that they would face difficulties in the first few grands prix. However, Alonso has performed amazingly well in the season so far and has been successful in limiting
the damage for his team.
He secured an impressive fifth place finish in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, after setting off from 12th grid position.
Later, in the second race held at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, he took an incredible victory in rainy conditions. In the next two races, he secured 9th and 7th place finishes after qualifying for 9th grid position in both of them.
Afterwards, he secured fantastic second and third podium finishes in the last two races after beginning from 2nd and 5th places in the grid.
Montezemolo admired the two-time world champion and said that he has all the potential to win the championship title this year. Nevertheless, he said that they need to keep on making the significant developments and the necessary preparations so as to improve
the pace of F2012 for the forthcoming races in order to make their position stronger in this year’s championship.
“Alonso is the best driver in the world. Alonso is one of those drivers, like Lauda and Schumacher, who have had a great importance in my professional life and in that of Ferrari. He has all requisites for winning, but we need to improve car,” he said. “Alonso
has a fantastic attitude: just like Schumacher, he knows how to work closely with team and he maintains that positive attitude, even in difficult moments. Now the aim is to improve for the round in Canada.”
Besides, he is hopeful that Alonso’s teammate, Felipe Massa who struggled in the first five races will also perform well in the upcoming races after his sixth place finish in Monte Carlo.
“I think Felipe will do well in the second half of the season,” he added.
