Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo thinks Sergio Perez is not ready for Ferrari yet – Formula 1
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo does not think that the Mexican driver Sergio Perez is ready to drive for Ferrari just yet.
Perez who narrowly came second to Fernando Alonso during the Malaysian Grand Prix was talked up to be the next man for Ferrari to replace the troublesome Felipe Massa.
Massa has been suffering from the poorest run of his career, and has remained mostly unable to come up with any signs of returning to his potential. The speculations of his end time with the team have never been so loud.
It seems that one way or another it is going to be the last season for the Brazilian with Ferrari. Who will be filing the gap left by him is the question and Perez was rumoured to be a likely candidate.
Perez is also a Ferrari developmental driver yet Ferrari president Montezemolo said that Perez will need to prove himself before he can step up to race for the team.
“Perez is a good driver but to drive a Ferrari you need more experience,” he told Reuters. “I think he is one of the potential best young drivers for the future but before putting a young driver in a Ferrari I need more experience and more results.”
Massa improved his performance slightly during the Monaco Grand Prix and finished in the top ten. Montezemolo has said that the Brazilian would need to remain consistent in the remainder of the season to help his case in a bid to secure a race seat beyond
2012.
“I'm sure that, because we are improving our car, the car will be less difficult to drive,” he said. “And I expect from Felipe better performances as I have already seen in Monte Carlo, because in Monte Carlo he was among the five quickest drivers on the
track and in the qualifiers. So I hope he will continue like this. At the moment we are not taking any decision yet for the future, because it is too early.”
It will be interesting to see how Massa fares in the season ahead and which other names Ferrari will be looking into if they need to replace the Brazilian.
