Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo warns Felipe Massa for 2012 season – Formula 1 news
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has warned Felipe Massa that he cannot take his place for granted at Ferrari from the next 2012 season.
Although Montezemolo admitted that Massa is a talented driver, and he has faith in his potential, which he displayed earlier in 2008 when he almost won the championship, but reckons that he will have to reinvigorate his performance in 2012 in order to keep
his seat.
“Let's hope [2012] goes well,” Montezemolo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I have great confidence in our drivers and there seems to have been a clarification as regards the regulations. I'm sure we'll have a more competitive car. The drivers? We
have a contract with Fernando until 2016 and he's the best driver in the world.”
Felipe Massa has had a torrid 2011 season, scoring only 108 points compared to his compatriot Fernando Alonso’s 245 points. The Brazilian driver was not able to finish higher than fifth throughout the season. The poor show has led to draw speculation over
his future at Ferrari.
“Massa's contract will run for the whole of next season,” Montezemolo said. “Let's hope he can finish the season with a good result in Brazil, we expect great things from him in 2012 and then we'll decide how to proceed. Let's say he'll have to prove himself
next season.”
Montezemolo also talked about the teams overall performance and said that he was definitely not satisfied with the performance of the current 2011 season and wants the team to take more risks during the winter to be more competitive.
He said that if he had to give marks to his team he would give them 5 out of ten but quickly retracted and said he might give them six considering the effort they put in to win at Silverstone which marked the 60th year of Ferrari’s first win in F1 on the
day of the victory.
Ferrari are looking to improve their performance for next season and Massa will have to put his issues with Lewis Hamilton behind and focus on the job at hand. Otherwise, his place could be in serious jeopardy. Let’s see the Brazilian responds to this.
