Ferrari principal Stefano Domenicali: FOTA’s future in doldrums? – Formula 1 news
Ferrari principal Stefano Domenicali recently stated that he has doubts if the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) will be sustaining for long.
He personally feels that there is little need for organization as the latter has not been of much advantage to the teams till yet.
“In terms of the cost cutting (disagreement), we can no longer afford to continue like this,” Domenicali speaking to AFP said, “If there is no trust, there is no need to go forward. We know why FOTA was put together so we need to understand whether we still
need it.”
Amid fears that the organisation might break apart soon, a meeting has been scheduled at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to discuss the fate of FOTA and come up with a unanimous decision.
FOTA president Martin Whitmarsh who is also McLaren team principal feels that Formula 1 teams need to leave behind their little differences and look at the bigger picture. In addition, he stated that they must work together for the betterment of the sport rather
than pointing fingers at each other and raising allegations at other teams. Moreover, they should, instead focus on improving their racing for the rest of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
There are certain genuine issues that need to be looked upon and taken care of such as the implementation of Resource Restriction Agreement. Teams have shown concerns over RRA of late and there has been conflict among the Formula 1 outfits regarding overspending
issues.
The matter needs to be resolved sooner rather than later as the future of FOTA will determine the Concorde Agreement.
Whitmarsh said, “I think we have got to work together to enhance trust and mutual respect in the process. Will we ever reach a stage where everyone is very comfortable, has no concern, no accusation? I doubt (that), but I think it has been the right thing
for the sport and I think we have got to continue to persevere with it.”
With FOTA going through the toughest time ever and possibly at the brink of splitting up, let’s see what future has in store for this organization.
