Ferrari principal Stefano Domenicali wants Qualifiers’ rules amended – Formula 1 news
Team principal of Ferrari Stefano Domenicali wants a shake-up of the qualifying and tyre regulations to encourage all cars to take part in the Q3 session.
It has been the case that slower drivers in the top 10 have been opting to sit out the Q3 in order to save fresh sets of tyres for the race. However, considering the drivers who are likely to qualify for ninth or tenth do not really have a reason to set
a time in quite a few cases, which makes the situation a significant one.
On the other hand at Suzuka, the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix weekend saw four drivers fail to set a time in Q3 with Bruno Senna, Vitaly Petrov and Kamui Kobayashi opting not to set a time, whereas veteran Michael Schumacher ran out of time ahead of the chequered
flag.
“Far be it for me to criticize those who made this choice, which is absolutely respectable from a technical point of view, I think it shows something is not right in the way qualifying is run and we should give it some careful thought for the future, because
I don't think it's such a good thing for the spectators in the grandstand, who, I must say here are amazing in the way they make you feel their passion for Formula One,” he added.
Pirelli has also been trying hard this season to get a regulation change for tyre allocation, because of all the wastage of rubber, but so far they have not been successful in impressing the teams with their suggestion.
Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has also been very vocal about the need to have the rule changed, but realises that he can only suggest the idea as the final decision rests with the teams.
Let’s see how the 15th Formula 1 round of the 2011 season, the Japanese Grand Prix turns out to be at the legendary Suzuka circuit on Sunday, October 9.
