Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali predicts drivers for the 2012 title – Formula 1 news
Ferrari team Principal Stefano Domenicali believes the 2012 season’s title race will evolve into a three-way battle with Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel fighting it out to the wire.
After the recently concluded Canadian Grand Prix the drivers’ championship table is featuring the trio in the top three slots with Hamilton leading after winning at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit followed by Alonso who is narrowly ahead of Vettel at third.
The competitiveness in the season has been unmatched in the history of the sport as seven different victors of the seven Grands Prix completed so far is record. This means that the title can still be contended by at least the top six drivers.
Domenicali thinks that the battle for the championship is shaping up after the Canadian GP and is speculating that the current top three will be ones fighting for it till the end.
“I think at the end of the day, looking at the championship, it's going to be a fight between Sebastian Lewis and Fernando. That's what I feel,” he said after the Canadian Grand Prix. “Maybe because everyone is thinking one thing before the race and another
after, maybe after Valencia it will be different. But honestly I think the championship could evolve into a fight between the first three drivers.”
Domenicali showed disappointment over the results of the Canadian GP and said that the car was capable of bringing in more points than it did, while admitting that the one stop strategy backfired. He remained confident going ahead as he said that the car
is now very competitive relative to how the team started with technical difficulties that threatened there bid for any of the titles in the current season.
He added that Ferrari is planning more updates for Valencia. He said that the first priority there will be to first get a pole position that the team has not been able to get for some time now. He mentioned that the updates will have an impact on the performance
of the car but said that rival teams will be updating as well so the race will reveal how much of an impact the updates bring.
