Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali wants damage control – Formula 1 news
Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali emphasised on the team’s need to limit damage more effectively at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso won the Malaysian Grand Prix and stunned the world when no one was giving Ferrari a chance come up trumps. The weather did play its role in the win and after the race both Alonso and Domenicali said that the win was not a true reflection
of their car’s performance and admitted that there is still a lot of work required to be done in order to maintain success.
The Ferrari camp knew exactly what they were talking about as Alonso struggled at the Chinese Grand Prix and finished 9th while his team-mate Felipe Massa could not finish with points.
Ferrari knew even before the season started at the pre-season tests that the team is going to struggle with their new car the F2012. Now the team wants to make all the changes required as fast as they can to produce better results and keep their race on
for the season title.
“We will have to get the most out of the tyres, both in qualifying and in the race. Understanding when and how much can be got out of the tyres has been the key factor to this first part of the season. It can make the difference and we must improve our ability
to analyse and predict their behaviour,” said Domenicali.
“We knew we would have problems in Shanghai and Sakhir,” Domenicali said. “Of course, we're unhappy at not being able to bring home the points tally we could have done in China.”
Domenicali said that Alonso had just as many points in 2010 when he was at this stage of the season and the Spaniard went on to be in contention for the drivers’ Championship at the final race of the season. He added that fact gives the team motivation to
improve and put in more effort for the best results.
The car needs to be improve in pace the Top speed is not where it needs to be, tyre strategies need to be looked into as well. Domenicali said that the prediction of how the tyres are going to behave under different conditions need to be more precise.
It will be interesting to see how Ferrari fare as the season progresses with all the updates and changes they plan to make to their car.
