Ferrari technical chief Pat Fry admits F2012 still requires work – Formula 1 news
Ferrari technical chief Pat Fry has said that the team is feeling the pressure to come up with an improved version of the F2012 that can be as competitive as the leaders of the grid.
He suggested that even though Fernando Alonso was able to conjure up a brilliant win for the Ferrari at the Malaysian Grand Prix, the technical team is still under tremendous pressure to get the right tweaks for the car.
The F2012 has been marred by technical difficulties ever since the first pre-season test. Pat Fry and the technical team has been working hard to come up with the right balance, but the team still has not been able to find the right balance for the car.
Felipe Massa has been found to have the most trouble with the car, and his dipping form does not help his case either. Fry before the season began after the pre-season tests said that the new car will find it difficult to get any podiums.
Fry is now saying that despite Alonso’s win there is still much work to be done. “I think the pressure is on the team to try and get the car performing,” said Fry, who is working on a raft of updates to the car that should be ready for the Spanish Grand
Prix.
“Here [in Malaysia], if anything, we had to do the best we could to make the most of the situation. In these situations our car is quite reasonable. But if it had been a completely dry race it would have been a totally different story,” he said.
Weather was a major factor in the win and that is basically the main reason Fry knows that the car is not up to the mark. Especially because the runners up of the race Sergio Perez gained on Alonso in his Sauber, and it was clear that the Ferrari found it
difficult to keep the Sauber away. It was more the skill of Alonso that secured the win than the car.
It will be interesting to see how Ferrari fares as the season progresses.
