Ferrari technical director Pat Fry says team on the right direction to success – Formula 1 news
Ferrari technical director Pat Fry said that the team has learned from the slow start that they had to go through in the initial part of the season.
Fry said that Ferrari has basically learned from its mistakes and is now on its way to making amends and moving forward in the season.
The team suffered right from the pre-season testing as the F2012 was not up to the level of other leading cars on the grid. The struggles were so worrying that Fry initially said that the car would not be able to get podiums.
Fernando Alonso though had other plans, and went on to record a victory at the second race of the season in Malaysia. The weather conditions helped the Spaniard but it motivated the team to keep working hard and try to get the car to be competitive.
A major update package was introduced during the Mugello test and since then on the car looks very strong. Although Felipe Massa is still finding it difficult to find a good rhythm but Alonso had no troubles whatsoever during the Spanish GP that followed
the Mugello test.
“There were a few aerodynamic characteristics that we didn't want and if anything we spent too much time concentrating on the exhaust,” he said. “We didn't get that sorted well enough and we stopped that [line of development] halfway through the second test.
I think having done that work we've learned a h**l of a lot from it so you can take some positives out of the situation we were in. For me it's been good looking back and seeing what we got wrong and why we got it wrong and then seeing how the organisation
has responded.”
The Spaniard finished second to Pastor Maldonado and tied at the top of the table with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.
The recent development of the car has led Fry to believe that Ferrari still has a very good chance of bidding for the Constructors' championship as well as the Drivers Championship.
It will be interesting to see how Ferrari fare at the Monaco Grand Prix, the weather conditions imply that the Ferraris might find success but it remains to be seen who ends up triumphant in this exciting race.
