Ferrari to help Toro Rosso in acquiring stronger KERS
Toro Rosso is more than excited at the return of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). With the assistance of Ferrari, the team’s engine suppliers, the Austrian squad hopes to build a strong system for its 2011 campaign.
Toro Rosso is a junior team owned by Red Bull, the Austrian beverage producing company. Although, KERS technology had already been employed in 2009 Formula One season, but due to its high cost it was banned prior to the start of 2010 season. Now that it
has been once again re-introduced in the sport, many of the junior teams including Toro Rosso which have not used it earlier, are expected to benefit from the technology now. However, unlike some of its rivals, who are building the system this season from
scratch, Toro Rosso has the benefit of a ‘tried and tested system’ of Ferrari with them.
The ‘engine supply arrangement’ signed between Toro Rosso and Ferrari gives the prior team a chance to employ the KERS of the Italian team. Ferrari used this system extensively in 2009, when it first hit the Formula One tracks.
However, as the system makes its way in the sport once again, Toro Rosso is not going to use the KERS designed by Ferrari as it is, rather a number of advancements are expected to be made. The team declared earlier this week that it is making the most of
Ferrari’s expertise. It is expecting to see tremendous technical advancements along with making the KERS technology as practical as it can.
While addressing its fans one of the team’s spokesman stated, “The men from Maranello have a good knowledge of all the practical aspects of running the system. In conjunction with Ferrari we are running a training programme prior to testing, so that we do the
maximum possible in order to ensure the highest level of safety for the guys and to make sure we deal adequately with the electrical side of the KERS.”
Currently, Ferrari is carrying an extensive training for the team to impart all the sufficient knowledge about the system to the team. Not only Toro Rosso’s engineers are being trained but the entire race crew of the team is undergoing extensive training exercises
so that the operations of the system are understood by everyone for a smooth functioning of KERS-equipped cars this season.
However, the team further reported, “There will be times when we can behave exactly as previously, but in other situations we will restrict access to garage areas, if for example we are charging batteries or going through other procedures that require extra
care.”
