Ferrari tyre development head says they need to make their tyre-operating window wider
Hirohide Hamashima, the director of Ferrari tyre development has said that they need to make the tyre-operating window of F2012 wider in order to improve its performance for the season ahead.
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso took an impressive victory in the second race hit by the rain at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and secured an incredible fifth place finish in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia after starting
from 12th place in the grid.
After the opening two races, Alonso is leading the drivers’ championship with 55 points while Ferrari team is at third position in the constructors’ championship with 35 points.
Nevertheless, the Spaniard said that they still have a lot of work to do in order to improve their performance in the normal race conditions.
Furthermore, Hamashima also said that they lack competitiveness in area of tyres and they need to find out the necessary developments to be made to the car for the sake of enhancing its pace for the upcoming races.
“Honestly speaking, still we are struggling,” said Hamashima about the tyre performance. “The car has potential, but so far we can't find the good point at the moment. In the winter, sometimes we could find the good point, but sometimes there was a big difference.
And, at the same time, we have to find the good point and also make the car more robust. We at Ferrari have solved the warm-up problem. But in terms of the different positions of the compounds by Pirelli, the car helps so much to fix the warm-up problem.”
Moreover, he said that they have a car which is more competent in the race as compared to the qualifying. He added that the wet track like the one at Sepang might favour the car.
Besides, he said that they need to find a good balance for their car so as to enhance its pace in every kind of race situation.
The Scarlet team is trying its best to make the essential preparations and the substantial enhancements in the car to perform well throughout the season.
