Ferrari unveil first stage of major updates planned for 2012 Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari have unveiled the first stage of their major updates package in the in-season test at Mugello circuit which they have been planning to introduce in 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.
The Scarlet team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme with the design of F2012. Nevertheless, they have been looking forward to the Mugello test so as to evaluate the major developments in the car for the European season.
They have introduced the initial step of the upgrade package on the second day of the test as Felipe Massa run the car with new turning vanes beneath the nose. On the other hand, the Spaniard Fernando Alonso will be testing the new structure of the rear
bodywork on the final day of the test.
Noted Formula 1 commentator and analyst, Gary Anderson has said that these advancements have the potential to provide a competitive edge to the Italian team in the season ahead.
“On the sidepods they've put the exhaust pipes into a more conventional position,” explained Anderson. “They are not getting any great degree of benefit, but they’re not getting any negatives either, and I think with a troublesome car that’s the best place
to get to. Because of the way the letterbox exit for the exhaust was being used for a radiator exit they’ve had to compromise a little. They still have a radiator exit there in the new iteration, but it is much narrower and the coke bottle is much better.”
It will be important to mention that Ferrari expressed that they will struggle in the first few races of the season. Nonetheless, Alonso secured an impressive fifth place finish in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia after starting
the race from 12th place in the grid.
Moreover, he took an amazing victory in the second race at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia in the rainy conditions. However, in the third and fourth race he could only secure 9th and 7th place finish. Contrarily, Massa has only been able to score
2 points in the season until now and is facing difficulties in finding the pace.
Over and above, Ferrari are at fourth place in the constructors’ championship in the season so far with 45 points ahead of Mercedes AMG and are aiming to enhance their pace in the upcoming races in order to fight for the championship title.
