Ferrari will have to experience some pain – Fernando Alonso
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso warned his team Ferrari that they will have to experience some major pain if they want to stay in the chase for the title.
Ferrari were way off the pace of their rivals Red Bull and McLaren at the halfway stage of the 2010 season but after two back-to-back victories for Alonso at Monza and Singapore, Ferrari is back in the race for both drivers’ and constructors’ titles.
Alonso is just 11 points short of the drivers’ championship leader Mark Webber thanks to two consecutive victories, however the title is still open as just 25 points divide the top 5 drivers in the drivers’ standings. Fernando warned that even a single
mistake could put their title hopes in jeopardy.
“These two consecutive wins have reduced the gap that had built up but we are definitely not leading yet”, Alonso said in his official Ferrari blog.
Fernando thinks that the title hunt is starting to get serious and the team will have to experience many difficulties and everyone should give their 100% performance now without making a single mistake. It will not be easy, as four other drivers will be
fighting for the title the same way so it is a matter of hard work now. The current situation is quite unstable and things can change quickly so it is anybody’s game at the moment.
It seems that Ferrari might not be showing any progress in some way forcing the former world champion to give such a statement. Ferrari has been through this situation many times before but it seems that the team might be getting a bit lazy after their win
at the Singapore grand prix.
The gap between Fernando Alonso and the drivers’ championship leader Mark Webber is just 11 points but this season has been the perfect example of versatility making the future very unpredictable. The only way to secure the titles this year is to perform
confidently without any hesitation since each race has been unpredictable in every way.
The teams cannot expect a track to favour their car potentially making races more dependable on the driver’s performance rather than the car’s performance. This season has been quite confusing in terms of points for the fans but it is quite clear that a
25 points margin is just a race win and every race is vital for the drivers.
Ferrari has had a very inconsistent season this year and that is the reason why the Spaniard seems worried. Ferrari had a good start this year but a very disappointing mid-season during the European races. It was quite an amazing come back from the Italian
team though as the team managed to recover from such a heavy loss and it seemed that this is just a two horse race between Red Bull and McLaren this year.
Ferrari is just 40 points short of McLaren who are in 2nd place in the constructors’ standings. One can disagree with Ferrari when they claim that they can win both titles as Ferrari is 64 points short of the constructors’ championship leaders
Red Bull with just 3 races remaining in the 2010 season.
“What is certain is that if any of the five put a foot wrong, then it will be even harder for them. I stick with my belief that the key is to always finish on the podium and then do the maths in Abu Dhabi”, he added.
The 29 year old described his Monza victory as the moment of a lifetime and was not able to explain that unique feeling. However, Alonso believes that these two wins showed the capabilities of the car and that is more important that the points.
“The wins in Monza and Singapore inspire confidence, especially as they came after a difficult season, in which our championship chances have often hung by a thread”, he said. The Spaniard believes that winning on two very different types of tracks confirms
that Ferrari is very versatile and the team can tackle the coming races without any fear.
