Ferrari wishes their third Formula One car to be run by either Penske or Ganassi
The 2011 Formula One season is going to be quite exhilarating but complicated at the same time since the FIA has introduced an abundance of new rules and regulations. Teams will be allowed to use KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System)
and movable rear wings next season.
However, Ferrari’s President Luca di Montezemolo recently stated that he believes that each team should have 3 cars in 2011 and claims that he will keep supporting this until the FIA gives a verdict. He named two American racing
giants Penske and Ganassi as his possible partners but the American fans especially from both sides of the Atlantic were not happy about Luca’s statement.
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo stirred up Formula One waters when he announced that he was still planning to push for three-car teams, and named American racing giants Penske and Ganassi as possible partners. The announcement
caused an equal upset on both sides of the Atlantic, as American fans reacted with emotions ranging from hope to outrage at di Montezemolo’s statement.
Ferrari has been continuously calling the FIA, F1’s governing body with this idea as they believe that this would improve Ferrari’s chance of winning the Constructors’ title and this would make the sport even more competitive as
most of the back running/smaller teams would be squeezed out of the sport.
“It would be nice to see a third Ferrari fielded perhaps by a private American team. I'm thinking of a team like Ganassi or Penske. On the question of a third car, we are determined,” di Montezemolo told the media.
Since BMW, Honda and Toyota have withdrawn from the Formula One grid, Ferrari is the best-funded team on the grid and Ferrari will benefit the most if teams expand.
“If a team does not have the money to be in Formula One, they can go to GP2. It is disheartening to see someone like [Lotus driver Jarno] Trulli many seconds behind. Think what Jarno could do with a Ferrari given to his team,”
di Montezemolo continued.
However, this might not favour many teams as some of the back running teams will be forced out of the sport and that is not how F1 is or what Formula One is about. Many teams struggle for a couple of their initial years but then,
teams like Red Bull and Renault have proved that a back running team can evolve and compete against the top running teams as well with due time.
