Ferrari’s Aldo Costa believes that an ‘all rounder’ car will succeed more in 2011 – Formula 1 news
Since the reintroduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and movable rear wings in Formula 1, the teams have been facing a lot of problems regarding the fact that balancing their respective cars in terms of pace and consistency has become very difficult.
In short, coming up with a ‘balanced or all rounder’ car is not as easy as it seems.
Aldo Costa, Ferrari’s technical director recently stated that his team is not as conventional as the other top running teams.
“I think the fastest car will be the one with the best performance balance between aerodynamics, the mechanical side and reliability. If you attempt something extreme in one area, you might pay in another, so for a car that wins you need a balanced approach,”
Costa told the media.
Since some of the teams are trying to focus on KERS more than the rest of the areas of the car, Costa believes that those teams are going to fail in 2011 and it is going to be something similar to what happened in 2009.
“Mechanically, the car will be almost complete at Jerez [this week], but from an aerodynamic standpoint, there are still a lot of changes coming. More than an extreme approach, we are seeking a productive approach and ultimately it will be the lap times
that will make the verdict,” Costa added.
In 2009, KERS was introduced and Red Bull Racing and BrawnGP did not use KERS and became the top 2 teams of 2009. On the other hand, McLaren and Ferrari used this device and failed to perform as it is believed that they did not balance their cars properly.
This does not mean that the teams should avoid using KERS in 2011 either. Since the FIA has increased the weight limit of a car, the teams can now easily use KERS in their cars without exceeding the official weight limit.
It is believed that in 2011, Mercedes are going to be one of the top running teams once again and this time, both Mercedes and Red Bull are going to use KERS.
2011 is going to be an interesting year for the Formula 1 fans and it is definitely going to be more unpredictable than the 2010 season.
