Ferrari’s F1 championship bid is no joyride
While all eyes were focused on Mark Webber at the Korean Grand Prix, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso came up from behind to clinch the race, taking the lead in the drivers’ standings.
Due to his unprecedented win, the atmosphere at the Italian team’s Maranello factory has been festive. But amidst the revelry, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has cautioned prudence and focus.
"In these last few races, we have seen Ferrari working perfectly. We are just a team that never surrenders. However, we have not actually won anything yet."
In sports such as F1, where championships are made and lost by millions of constantly changing variables, Montezemolo understands that unbridled overconfidence is as dangerous as undue pessimism.
"Each one of us must go about our business in a level-headed fashion, with concentration and determination, and then we can add up the figures in Abu Dhabi."

Ferrari’s conservative approach may have been responsible for the team’s recent under-dog upsets. After a lethargic start to the 2010 season, Ferrari has certainly been a Johnny-come-lately, scoring 166 points over the last six races.
But while Alonso manoeuvred himself into the lead of the drivers’ standings, he is still only ahead of Mark Webber by a mere 11 points.  Similarly, Ferrari is still third in the constructors’ championship, holding 374 points compared to Red Bull’s 426, and
McLaren’ 399 points.

Given that everything is still up for grabs, team principal Stefano Domenicali was just as keen as Montezemolo to guard against complacency.
"Now comes the hard part. Over the next three weeks, we have to do everything perfectly - the work at the track and at home, and preparation for the races."
Recognizing that the key to racing is keeping a level, professional head and an unwavering focus on the road that lies ahead, and Domenicali echoed his boss’ sentiments.
"Keeping a cool head is what will make the difference and we must not get carried away with the words of praise, just as we did not get downhearted by the criticism in the most difficult moments. We should leave unguarded enthusiasm at the door."

Ferrari's next hurdle is the Brazilian Grand Prix, which will take place on November 5-7.
