Ferrari’s Felipe Massa: I could have finished fourth had it not been for Lewis Hamilton – Formula 1
Ferrari’s Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa has stated that his car showed some good potential up front and he could have finished as high as fourth, had it not been for McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.
The Brazilian further added that although he ended his race shamefully, but still the car has shown some good potential in the last couple of races which is one positive thing to carry against the front running teams.
Massa retired from the Monaco Grand Prix after he had a crash with Hamilton just before the tunnel.
Commenting on the race, Massa said, “Unfortunately, there was the accident with Hamilton, which put me out of the running. It was a real shame. Fernando showed, by fighting at the front right to the end, we had a very good potential.”
The Brazilian added that his race pace was good for a fourth place finish but things turned out differently for him.
Previously Massa heavily criticised Hamilton and his driving style in the Monaco Grand Prix which ruined the outcome of the race. But now, as Hamilton has apologised to him and Williams’ Pastor Maldonado, Massa is looking into the Monaco Grand Prix as a
positive thing.
“For the spectators - and unfortunately I was one of them - the second part of the race was very exciting, and there was at least one positive aspect to the weekend and that is the fact our car was much more competitive,” added Massa.
Massa has scored 24 points in the opening four races of the 2011 season. In the last two races in Spain and Monaco, the Brazilian was unable to finish the race and therefore has not contributed to the constructors’ table standing of the team.
Nevertheless, he stated that some upgrades are planned for the Canadian Grand Prix which will suit the Ferrari car on the supersoft Pirelli compound.
Ferrari are currently way back in terms of championship points to the front running teams and the best they can do from here on is to fight the McLaren team for second place.
