Ferrari’s Felipe Massa cautious on Drag Reduction System use at Malaysia Grand Prix – Formula 1 News
Formula 1 Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has recently updated the media that, if the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile allows the use of the adjustable rear wing on both main and back straights of the Malaysia circuit, it can be detrimental to the race
and make overtaking too easy.
The FIA allowed the use of the Drag Reduction System on the main straight only, while its use on both straights will give a better chance of overtaking to the driver and make the race easy for the teams.
Massa said, "With the moveable rear wing, the situation will be interesting here, because for the moment, the plan is to be allowed to use DRS during the race on the straight in front of the pits, but at Sepang, the straight that runs back the other way
is actually longer."
He further added that the team are waiting for the final decision from the FIA to see whether they will be allowed to use the system on both straights in the race. The decision by the FIA will make the Sepang race more interesting for the viewers and drivers,
but personally Massa wishes to use the DRS on only one back or front straight because he thinks that it might make overtaking very easy. Massa wants some tough competition among the strong rivals in Malaysia.
He went on to say, "At Sepang, the two straights follow one another, so if you are quicker than the car ahead, you might not even try and pass on the first straight, preferring to get well prepared and as close as possible, before then having a simple overtaking
move on the second straight."
Massa admitted that Ferrari had really worked hard to be stronger in Sepang following their disappointing start of 2011 Formula 1 season. He added, no one at Ferrari was satisfied with their overall performance, as after the Australia Grand Prix the team
was busy focusing on identifying their worst performance and then set a better plan to move forward successfully this weekend.
Ferrari is expected to put in a good performance at the Malaysian Grand Prix that will start on 10 April, at the Sepang circuit.
