Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso claims the team has nothing to lose now – Formula 1 news
The two-time former Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has recently stated that Ferrari do not have anything to lose anymore so they must take more risks from now on until the end of the 2011 season in order to close in on the championship leader Sebastian
Vettel more efficiently.
“There is no doubt it is extremely difficult to close the gap, but we will fight while there is a mathematical chance. We have seen strange things happen in Formula One and with the current points system, the situation can change dramatically in two or three
races,” he said.
He claims that the point’s gap in the drivers’ standings is still achievable but only if he wins most of the remaining races of the 2011 Formula 1 season. Other than that, things can get easier for the championship chasers if Sebastian Vettel fails to score
good points on two occasions at least.
Nevertheless, Alonso wants to win the Belgian Grand Prix this year as he revealed that he has never won a race at Spa-Francorchamps and since it is a legendary circuit, he wants to add it to his list as well.
“Here at Spa, a track that is very different to Budapest, we will be trying to confirm that the car is still competitive, trying to get a fifth consecutive podium. I am still waiting for a victory here, as it is one of a couple of circuits where I have not
won, so why not this year in Spa?” said the Spaniard.
However, Ferrari have announced recently that they are going to shift their focus to the development of their 2012 Formula 1 car as they have already upgraded the 2011 car to its limit.
They are going to introduce some minor upgrades though but still, the improvement level of the 2011 car is not going to be as efficient as it was during the first 11 races of the 2011 Formula 1 season keeping in mind that they are still competing for the
drivers’ title this year.
