Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso eyeing second place in 2011 drivers’ championship – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is eyeing second position in the 2011 drivers’ championship in the ongoing Formula 1 season.
Alonso finished off the recently held Singapore Grand Prix in the 4th position in his car after starting 5th at the grid. After the race, his dreams of securing the 2011 title came to an end
when McLaren-Mercedes’ Jenson Button finished off at 2nd position. Therefore, the Spaniard has now set his target for the second place.
The 30-year-old driver currently sits at third position on the drivers’ championship standings with 184 points.
Alonso understands that his Ferrari car might not be as competitive as that of Red Bull and McLarens. He is still up for challenging both the teams to end this season in the second place.
The Spaniard has not been able to perform as well as he should have, still he is optimistic that he can grab a second place for himself if he plays his cards well.
Alonso said, “Clearly, if one looks at the way recent races have gone, it will definitely not be easy, as my closest rivals seem to have that little bit extra in terms of car performance, but that does not mean it's a lost cause. We know we have to do everything
perfectly if we want to reach our goal and we will be trying right to the very end.”
He needs to enter the remaining races with calculated moves to make sure he does not make any mistake as a flawless performance is what is required from him, he said.
Regarding the constructors’ championship, the Ferrari team is in the third place as of now and it would be an even bigger challenge to beat the Red Bull team and the McLarens given the kind of strength they have displayed with their cars so far.
Alonso added, “In the end, myself and all the team just want to end a season that did not go the way we wanted in the best way possible. Taking at least one win would be the maximum, while the important thing is to always be in the fight for the podium places.”
Let’s see how Alonso performs in the remaining five races of this season.
