Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso hoping for a rainy race day at the Brazilian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso hopes there will be rain on race day Sunday at the Brazilian Grand Prix, so that the scarlet car can be more competitive.
Rain was forecasted for the qualifiers and the race, although it did not rain during the qualifiers, Alonso is hoping that will change on Sunday. He is placed fifth on the grid, a number that has grown some fondness with the Spaniard as it’s the eighth time
he is going to start from that grid position in the 2011 season.
Alonso will be up against both the Red Bulls and the McLarens ahead of him, and realizing the limitation of his car, hopes that it rains just like it did before the British Grand Prix, and the conditions played into Alonso’s hands and recorded his first
and only win of the season so far.
“If it really rains tomorrow, it will be a very exciting and open race: no one really knows how competitive they can be in the wet and then it requires next to nothing - one lap more or less out on track at a time when the conditions change,” Alonso said.
“It's true that for us, the problem of getting the tyres up to temperature is more acute in the wet, but then it's equally true that when the track does dry, we are quicker than our rivals: the various stages of the race at Silverstone demonstrated this
to be the case,” he further added.
Alonso also said that although he finished fifth like he has been doing so often this season, it was still a hard fought fifth place, as he is still not happy with the balance of his car, and conceded that the Mercedes are getting quicker so it would be
a difficult equation during the race. He added that overall though he is somewhat pleased with his performance considering all the factors.
The Brazilian Grand Prix is set for an exciting finish to a fantastic 2011 season, and it would be interesting to see how much effort the drivers put in to end their respective seasons on a high.
