Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso hoping to score first victory of 2011 season at Canadian GP – Formula 1
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has said after scoring the 2nd position in the qualifying session of the Canadian Grand Prix that he is hoping to score his first victory of the 2011 season this weekend in Montreal.
Alonso’s second fastest time of the qualifying session was just 2 tenths of a second short of the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel’s fastest time. As a result, the Spaniard is now going to start the Canadian Grand Prix from 2nd place on
the grid.
His teammate Felipe Massa surprisingly is going to start from 3rd place on the grid which might prove to be a helping hand for Ferrari and Fernando but since Red Bull Racing Team is the fastest team on the grid so far, the start is going to be
very crucial for the two Ferrari drivers.
“It's the best result of the year for the team to be second and third. Two tenths behind Red Bull is much better than we expected and a much better result than in the first six races. We are happy with today's performance from the car, the whole weekend
has been very smooth for us so I'm looking forward to tomorrow,” said Alonso.
He added that the conditions are going to change during the race as a result of which, starting from row 1 alongside Vettel is going to help him a lot. He hoped the race is going to be much competitive than the qualifying session.
Other than that, the Spaniard admitted that this was the team’s best performance of the season in terms of qualifying as the car felt quite competitive.
“The car felt competitive from yesterday and today. It is a good feeling being back to the top positions, close to fighting for pole, and having Felipe in the top three too is a nice team result,” said the former world champion.
Nevertheless, McLaren might be hoping for a good start as well and it is going to be a tough competition all around the grid at the start of the race.
