Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso no longer aiming for second position in drivers’ championship – Formula 1
Fernando Alonso of Ferrari reportedly admitted that he is no longer aiming for a runners-up position in this season’s Formula 1 championship.
The Spaniard recently said that he will be trying his best to secure a second place in the drivers’ championship from the races that remain in the 2011 season.
The recently held race at Suzuka witnessed the crowning of this year’s Formula 1 champion, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing, who had been superb all throughout this season. The race was won by Jenson Button of McLaren-Mercedes and Alonso finished off
at second place.
With Vettel topping the drivers’ championship for this season, Alonso feels that it would not make much of a difference to him if he finishes in the second position or not.
Alonso thus said that he will now be enjoying the remaining races without any pressure of winning. With that said, he will still try to win a race or two if possible, though chances of which seem not quite probable to him right now.
Commenting on the strength of Red Bull and McLaren team, Alonso said, “Red Bull will remain favourites for the remaining races and McLaren is strong in this part of the championship so we know it will be difficult.”
With regards to the constructors’ championship, Alonso is again sceptical about his team’s chances of making it big as the McLaren team is currently in the second place and have a huge points’ advantage over the Italian squad.
Hence, it will not be that easy for Ferrari to fill in the gap as the Working-based team is way up in the standings at the moment.
Alonso said, “We need to do the maximum but it's difficult to catch them. We will try to enjoy racing. When you can be aggressive at at the start, enjoy Sundays, maximise the potential of the car, and we know if we do that then the podium is very possible
and if there is one opportunity to win one remaining GP we will try to take it.”
Amid recent rumours regarding Sebastian Vettel joining Ferrari in future, Alonso does not have much to say except that he and Felipe Massa make a great pair and that his Brazilian teammate has been a great support. Whoever replaces him will be welcomed at
Ferrari and hopefully be a valuable addition to their team.
Let’s see how Alonso performs at this weekend’s Korean Grand Prix at the Korea International Circuit, Yeongam.
