Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso not entirely disappointed after Malaysian Grand Prix
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, despite being unable to get his Ferrari to the podium, was relatively happy with the team’s performance in the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Australian Grand Prix saw the Ferrari fall well below expectations and the Spaniard believed
that the trip to Malaysia had plenty of positives to offer.
Alonso felt that the car was finally capable enough to fight wheel to wheel for on track position and felt that it motivated the unit heading into the Chinese Grand Prix next.
However, the entire length of the race wasn’t a walk in the park for Ferrari. The adjustable rear wing caused all sorts of problems and it was hard to rely on it on consistent basis. Overtaking Lewis Hamilton might have been a touch easier as the Ferrari
would have definitely had more straight line speed to make a pass heading into turn 1.
Instead, the two cars had to rough it out. Alonso commended the McLaren driver for defending rather well and felt that it was most ‘unfortunate’ that the two cars made contact. The resulting unscheduled pit stop was the prime reason that the scarlet car
could no longer challenge for the Podium in Alonso’s eyes.
However, the Spaniard was quick to add that such things happen in the world of Formula One. They could happen to anyone, any car or any team for that matter and perhaps it was his number this time – But the thing with fate is that while it might handicap
a person at times, luck on the contrary, could make all the difference in the world on some other day.
Reflecting upon the Pirelli front, Alonso felt that the car managed its rubber rather well this time, thus, enabling him to challenge other cars for track position. However, judging by the package that they presently have at their disposal, the former Renault
driver still believed that challenging for Pole was still a bit of a question and hoped that it would change within the next few races.
Looking ahead at the race in Shanghai, Alonso felt that Ferrari were in for yet another tough weekend. However, he did touch upon having ‘something new’, but couldn’t commit on the progress it would enable them to make.
The Spaniard said, while talking to reporters, "We need to keep working in a good direction as we did [in Malaysia]. I left Sepang happier because we were fighting with them when we did not expect to be. So there’s a very positive atmosphere in the team."
Perseverance on the other hand, is the key according to Alonso. There was still a long way to go in the championship and nothing should be left to chance concluded the Ferrari man.
