Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso says Mark Webber showed Qualifier’s speed means nothing – Formula 1
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has admitted that Mark Webber’s run in the Chinese Grand prix was phenomenal. The Spaniard stated that Webber proved Qualifiers was of little importance, since only the fastest car would ultimately win. Alonso also emphasised that car development is more important than tyre strategy.
Ferrari’s midfield performance continued in China where both, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, finished at sixth and seventh place respectively. Ferrari’s easy run in the top ten was knocked by the surprising Mercedes duo, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, who did a fantastic job in their MGP-W02 to finish in top ten positions.
Above all, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, did an astonishing run in his RB7 and made it to the lower stair of the podium after starting the race from 18th grid position.
Alonso commented on the Australian’s run and said, “[Mark] Webber today showed qualifying is not very important. The easiest thing is to have a quick car, like Red Bull, you pit three, two, one times and you end up on the podium.”
The Spaniard commented on his performance and said that pit-stop strategy was not an issue for the Ferrari team. However, the car needed improvement if the team is eyeing higher grid positions.
“We need to improve the car above everything. I don't think it would have changed much. We were much slower than the cars we had in front so we would ended up with a similar result,” emphasised Alonso.
The two-time champion commented that the car was running well and never had any mechanical issue, despite being slow. Alonso did only two pit stops but, nonetheless, lost out to Mark Webber in a KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) failed car.
Alonso commented that despite having one less stop, he did not have any advantage on the top five drivers who were “flying like bullets”.
The next race will be contested in Turkey on the 8th of May and the Ferrari team will try to improve their race speeds to get some more points in the constructor’s table standings. Currently, Ferrari is 3rd on the constructor’s table with 50 points.
