Cheerio is correct. California and Hawaii both outlaw ferrets as pets.The laws were enacted to protect both the endangered Blackfooted Ferret and the environment - lawmakers were concerned about feral animals and their effect on the local environments. (Although I'm not sure this level of concern was ever necessary.) The CA law was enacted in 1933 by the Fish and Game Dept. The fine for having a ferret is $500 plus possible seizure of the animal.
