  1. My dog door has a plastic piece that can be inserted when I don't want the dogs to use the door.  I assume that you do not have this piece.  I would cover the door with cardboard or plastic while the kids are out because as soon as they see the dogs use the door, it will become the only thought in their minds.  Mine come out to greet me whenever they hear the door open and love to go outside to smell the air.  They are so little and are killed by just about every animal it will come in contact with.  You can use a gate but you will still have to watch them because they will try to scale the gate or squeeze through the side and they will be successful.  If you do not have a room that can be blocked off as a ferret room, your best bet is to make a permanent piece to your doggie door that it can be inserted when the ferret is out and your dogs will learn to either hold it or tell you they need to go out when the door is blocked.

This is what i use whe I cant watch my 8 ferrets.

But will need toys and such in the pen with him/her.

But its important you watch it at all times anyways. They will getinto anything they can.

  3. edit: oh i get you now sorry, ferrets will find theyre way out of anything and everything. i think your only option would be to get a gate and teach your dog to bark when it needs to go to the toliet, is there any where else your ferret can have some playtime, how about a ferret play pen the ones you can extend that way your ferret and be in one of those whilst you cant supervise it. good luck with your new ferret, bet you cant wait:)

  4. ferrets are incredibly sneaky critters...if theres a way out it will find it.

I recommend shutting the doggy door for a while and  training your dog to scratch at it to let you know he wants out/in...he will scratch...or cage the ferret only allowing him to roam at certain times.
