Question:

Ferret injections?

I did my research before going out to adopt my beautiful albino boy Jasper from a reputable breeder in my area, and was just wondering, now he's old enough for his jabs, roughly how much will it cost me for the distemper and rabies? I'm not overly bothered, just curious. (The price of injections was something I never was able to find on the web or in books)

Thanks in anticipation,

Steve.

  1. I don't want a ferret injection, and I don't think you do either.

  2. in the US for me is was 15 for rabies and 15 for distemper so maybe something like 13 euros for you

  3. It kind of depends where you go and what country you live in.

In the USA, ferrets need distemper and rabies injections. Usually, a ferret will have already had the first years rabies shot and the first distemper shot out of three. The breeder takes care of this. So the only ones you need to worry about the first year are the two subsequent distemper boosters.

If you purchased from a private breeder in the US, they should have told you which shots are still needed. Some get them vaccinated before they sell them to you, some don't. If he hasn't had ANY vax yet, he will need a rabies vaccination and 3 distemper boosters.

I'm not sure about the rules in the UK. I know that the islands are considered "rabies-free" but I'm not sure if animals still get vaccinated against it there.

The price of the shots depends on where you go. If you take him to an exotics vet clinic, the price of each shot could be about $20 or so, as well as an examination fee that could be anywhere from $20 to $100. However, lots of places have low-cost vet clinics on the weekends where you can get low-priced shots and you don't have to pay an examination/office visit fee. Petco is one place that almost always has this. Private pet shops often have these as well, or your local ferret rescue might sponser one. The price of the vaccinations will be lower, maybe $15-20 each.

You could always call your breeder and ask them.

Remember, never get your ferret a rabies and a distemper vaccination on the same day! There is a high risk for them to have an adverse reaction when they get both at the same time.

It's also a good idea to get your ferret microchipped if you can, and if you live in the US, it's also good to keep him on heartworm prevention. Ferrets can get that too.

If you put where you live, I can help you better. Who is your breeder?

Edit: Okay. Apparently there is no Distemper vaccination approved for ferrets in the UK. That means there is a small risk that your ferret will have a bad reaction to it. However, most UK breeders still feel that you should get it done because it's so easy for them to get distemper. You can bring it in the house on your clothes. Other than that, there is nothing else. Apparently they don't do rabies vax over there. :)
