Question:

Ferret litter training?

Okay so I have a ferret that was sort of forced upon me to take care of. I would really like to train him to take up using the litter box. He poops a lot and it's not too fun to clean out a dirty cage.

A few questions:

Can I use normal cat litter? Or is there a special kind of litter I need?

Will he cover it up like a cat? (This really doesn't matter, I'm just curious)

Also, I was thinking about doing the method of putting f***s already in the box, so he recognizes it as a bathroom area.

Does anyone have any suggestions with training and such? I can't always keep an eye on him to check if he's going in the right spot, as he lives on my back porch due to the smell.

Anyone who has litter trained a ferret before, your advice would be greatly appreciated (:

  1. Yes you can use reg. cat litter, do put alittle f***s in his box. ferrets are real hard to litter train.  my ferret liked to play in the litter.  I had ferret litter boxes in every corner of the room. You might want to put news paper down on his favorite areas to poo.

ferrets can only sweat through their nose so watch the temp. You might want to get a small cage for days that are too hot, so you can bring him in the house. try backing soda in the litter for oder control, and the clump litter so you can just scoop out the waste.

ferrets are escape artists, watch the screens, he might be able to get out.  i lost my ferrat minky, he unlocked the doggie door, never saw him again.  ferrets are a great pet good luck and have fun.

  2. I've had two ferrets and we potty trained them like they were cats and they go in the litter box and all that just like a cat.

  3. Ferrets p**p alot... they eat sleep and p**p. they are very playful as well

1)no you cant. normal cat litter causes blockage when they rub there butt on it which will cost you hundreds at the vet...its also very dusty and causes respitory problems.. Yesterdays new or ferret pellets are good to use. some people use shreded paper but that can be a pain and smells bad. I use coconut fiber.which u can get in the reptile section

2)No they dont.. ferrets and cats are totally diffrent.

      3) yes thats what ur supposed to do.. when he goes where he isnt supposed to and u catch him yell no put him back in the cage and put the p**p in the litter box. also make sure u put a litter box more then one when he is out of the cage. Put it in a corners that he seems to favor and some news paper under the box they drag there buts after they go.

Ferrets smell nothing u can do about it really.. and the more you wash them the more oil they will produce and the more they will smell... so only bath him once a month.

There diet is also a big factor in there smell.. If you feed them marshalls ferret food it has alot of fish which cause them to smell evo and natural gold is a great mix to feed them. you can get both here for really cheaphttp://stinkweasels.com/home.php?cat=258

Also make sure its not hot on ur back pourch. Ferrets are naturally 102 they over heat very easy! anything over 74 is really not good for them 84 the highest.

    Good luck!

Edit: ferrets dont sweat thats why they over heat so easy. also they adapt to cold rather well

Oh and no ferret is ever 100 percent litter trained

unlike cats if they dont see a litter box they wont go find it.. they will just back up into a corner and p**p
