  1. Ferrets are fun little creatures, they love to play, steal things, and sleep but it is also like having a little kid in the house, you have to put child locks on your cabinets were ur chemicals are stored and also under the sink, if the hole where ur pipes come into the house is big enough they will get out. If they can fit there head in it they can fit the rest of there body in it. (they can be litter boxed trained) There litter box does stink a little but there is stuff u can buy to put into the water for that, most pet stores that sale ferret stuff have it. they do have to go to the vet on a yearly  basis to get shots, feline rabies and canine distemper. But they are fun to watch and I carry mine around town in a back pack, my ferrets have been to the docs office with me, the store, and they love to go to pets mart on a harness, if u want to have them harness trained u must start them out when their babies so they will get used to it as they get older Its just easier that way. they love going in the great outdoors and exploring on a harness. Do not feed ferrets raisins, it is bad for them.

Breeding ferrets are difficult because the male and the female have to be in heat at the same time, plus if the female is not breed the first time she comes into heat, she will die. Plus most people who want baby ferrets, want them fixed and descented and by the time u pay a vet to do that, the cost in it would be around $200 and why would people want to pay that when they can go down to a pet store and get them cheaper and a one year warranty, u would make no money at it. The major companies like Marshall and Path Valley have vets on staff that fix and descent these ferrets on a regular bases and they a little cost into it. I would advise just getting a ferret as a pet. To learn more about ferrets they have a ferrets for dummies book and there is a web site called ferrets magazine, not sure of the address but if u were to type it in on a search engine u could find it easy.

  2. First of all, FERRETS ARE NOT RODENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Anyway, breeding should be left up to Marshall's, so don't breed, just like dogs, cats, etc. If you get a ferret from a pet store, it's going to be fixed anyway. Plus, where do you live, they are banned in HI and CA. It's too hot there anyway.

They need lots of playtime, AT LEAST four hours a day in a ferret-proofed room, always supervise them, play with them, and hold them correctly and often while they're little. For food, get a high-quality kibble, I use zupreem, and soak it in water for awhile to soften it up, but you don't have to do this for adults. Btw, they mature between 6 mos and a year. Back to food, kibble should be the staple of their diet, but you should also introduce eggs, beef, chicken, canned cat food, and other meats, so your ferret won't grow up to be picky. Ferrets are carnivores, they lack a cecum at the end of their intestines that digests vegetable fiber. As for treats, they can have a TINY (did I mention tiny?) bit of unhealthy stuff, like ice cream or fruit. Things to never let them eat: chocolate, nuts, beer, coffee, tea, etc. Always have fresh water out, tap water should be ok if it is filtered.

The cage should be made for a ferret, have multiple food and water bowls, toys, litter boxes, and proper bedding. For bedding, you can use old T-shirts, or baby blankets, and ferret hammocks. When you first take the ferret home, don't put the litter boxes in just yet. Let the ferret decide which corner he wants to go in. If it's a spot you'd rather he not go in, try cleaning up the p**p and putting the p**p in the litter box, then put the litter box in the corner you choose. Sometimes this works, sometimes not.

Ferrets must have lots and lots of toys. Make sure they can't chew or rip it up and digest anything. Hard rubber toys or sturdy cloth toys should be ok. This is just a fraction of what you need to know to properly care for a ferret. Are you sure you want one?

  3. Dont breed them. It's very difficult and theres thousands of homeless ferrets. Youll also probably get one thats fixed.

  4. 1 I wouldn't recommend you breeding a ferret. Breeding any animal is a very risky situation and unless you are very experienced... leave it to the professionals.

#2 if you are planning on buying a ferret from a petstore it will come spayed/neutered and descented.

#3 Ferrets are alot of work.  They are great pets but they are alot of work as well.  They do "stink" as some people like to put it.  Their scent is very different from any scent you will ever smell in your lifetime.  Their f***s and urine both have very odd scents as well.

They can be expensive.  Most ferrets cost about $120 in a petstore.  Their cages can be pretty expensive and although most people deny it... ferrets need to go to the vet just like a dog or cat.  They can get diseases just like dogs and cats and need to be vaccinated and checked by a vet yearly.  Believe me... I used to rehabilitate/adopt unwanted and abused ferrets and was taking care of and paying for 8 at one time.  Just one can be pricey.

If you are serious about getting a ferret here are some things you will need:

A cage[if you are just getting ONE ferret I would recommend looking on the second or third page of this link for smaller cages, you will only need a one to two level cage for one ferret]

Now that I have listed everything let me tell you about how you should set up the cage.  Put the bedding on the bottom.  Put the Litter box with litter in it in ONE CORNER! Try to fill every corner with something.  But only put one litter box in the cage.  Ferrets can be litter box trained like cats[with litter boxes outside of the cage] but its a difficult task so for now i would just focus on getting it to go to the bathroom in the litter box that will be in the cage.

In the other corners of the cage put:  The bed, whether it be a hanging bed, cube or one of the ones that hangs from the whole top of the cage... whatever.

    The food dish

The water dish.  This should cover most of the corners.  If you get a two level cage try to get two beds or two water bottles.  Try to make it so that there are no open corners[ferrets naturally use the bathroom in corners so if you leave an open corner...they will use the bathroom in that corner instead of in their litter box].  Leaving no open corners will save you from having to clean up poo all over the cage.  Only put one litter box in the cage for this reason:  If you put multiple litter boxes in the cage the ferret will think it can go to the bathroom where ever it likes.  So if you don't leave any open corners and only have one litter box it will only use the one litter box.  Change the litter daily.  But you shouldn't have to change the bedding in the bottom of the cage more than once every one or two weeks.  Feed and water daily etc.

Ferrets love cat toys.. anything that jingles or crinkles but make sure if you get them a cat toy that has a bell in it... there is NO POSSIBLE way they can get it out because if there is a will there is a way and a ferret will most definately destroy anything it can.  If you get cat toys that have bells in them and you think your ferret will be able to get the bell out[i guarantee it will probably have the toy dismantled within the first hour] take the bell out before givin

  5. first things first you need to know if you can breed ferrets in your area for example i believe you cant have ferrets in California thats first if you want to be legally doing this
