  1. I believe that the term you are thinking of is "halal," and it means "permissible" in Arabic.  Muslims refer to their food as halal to indicate that they food that they eat is permissible under Islamic Law, much like "kosher" refers to food that is permissible under Jewish Law.  Halal can be used to refer to anything that is permissible under the law, including manners of dress, speech, behaviour, career and other things.

Islam is a religion that follows the teachings of Mohammed and is monotheistic.  There are currently two main branches:  Sunni and s**+'a.  The branches originated due to a disagreement as to who should lead Islam after Mohammed (there were two leading factions).  For more information on Islam, check out the Encyclopedia of Islam:  http://philtar.ucsm.ac.uk/encyclopedia/i...

The Fertile Crescent refers to the area in the Middle East, shaped like a crescent, that includes areas in Egypt, Mesopotamia (today Iraq), and out to the Mediterranean Sea.  It encompases the Nile, Jordan, and Tigris/Euphrates river basins, all areas that are associated with having very good agricultural land.  This area is also known for giving rise to numerous major civilizations.  You can find more information on the Fertile Crescent here:  http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/prehistory/m...
