Question:

Fertility after miscarriage?

by  |  earlier

i had a miscarriage at 5 weeks.

I didnt have a d+c

And I got my period 29days after the miscarrige, and it has been regular since then.

I have not had any follow up tests or anything like that. I am not aware if I will need any.

Would this affect my fertility?

If I do, what tests would they be, and what tests did you have?

  1. It sounds normal to me.  I miscarried at 10 weeks, did have a D&C...my period took 7 weeks to come, and then went back to normal.  My OB told us to wait 2 months to give my uterus time to heal and then told us we could start trying again.  Five months after I miscarried I got pregnant again.

One miscarriage is, sadly, considered normal.  They won't do any sort of test on you until you have 3 or more consecutive miscarriages.  The odds of miscarrying a second time after a first miscarriage are almost exactly the same, which is why when they do have to do a medical procedure like a D&C on a miscarriage they don't run any tests on the remains.

Emotionally I was really fragile after my miscarriage and I've been totally neurotic during this one (I'm 21 weeks) but the two pregnancies couldn't have been more different.  My little girl is strong, and has been from 6 weeks.  My angel was never that strong, even though s/he tried to thrive, and her heartbeat never reached a good number.  There's nothing different about our environment, or my husband's or my health (although my husband did have pneumonia when he got me pregnant this time--we had no clue at the time).

It wasn't your fault and hopefully next time things will go better.

  2. at 5 weeks if you had a normal period after the  miscarrage you shouldnt need any further checkups but if your period was heavy or went for longer then normal you should have a test to check there is no membrane still in the uterus

and they would test for that by doing a simple blood test to check you HCG levels and that will determine if a d&c is needed

  3. sorry to hear that. You will be fine you may not need a follow up as your periods are normal. It wont affect your fertility dont worry .I had blood tests to see that my hormones levels had gone back to normal, but that was all.
