Question:

Fertilizer Lawn , Is it Grubs or Lawn Fungus?

I just applied the Scotts Summer Guard this past Sunday. Suddenly I'm noticing yellow spots all over the yard again...just like last year. The Summer Guard forumula claims it won't burn...so I couldn't have over fertilized. I can't tell if its Grubs or a Lawn Fungus type. Grr. Its scattered yellow and the grass is dead in the yellow spots. The spots all seem to be close to the house oddly enough. Any advice? I called Scotts and they suggested putting Grubs treatment down and then try a Lawn Fungus treatment. The problem with that is that's EXPENSIVE because I have a large yard.

Thanks

  1. if your Japanese beetle infestation is ending, it may well be grubs.. the new ones that are hatching from the eggs laid by the female beetles just recently..... prob close to where the flowers or trees attacked by the beetles were... like close to the house in the foundation plantings.....

lawn fungus comes in many types... and there's other problems that show up in mid summer heat, too... you would profit from a discussion with a person from a golf course who takes care of the greens and fairways!!!!.... or your county extension office agent.....

there's a whole flock of us garden folks who will not have a bag-a-bug anywhere near our gardens..... they call in every bug in the neighbor hood!!!!... and all it takes is a couple of the males to give UP on the bag and go find a lady and she'll drop off your plant and lay her eggs in YOUR yard cuz you called her and him over!!!.... if you want to use the bags, use them by placing them out in the woods or on the light pole at the corner or anywhere BUT right in your yard!!!....buy one for your neighbor... heehee....no, not really.... sigh...

  2. If you have grubs you could easily lift the grass in the troubled area as grubs eat the grass roots and kill the grass; grass there would be brown from decomposition.  This way you can at least eliminate grubs as the problem for your yellow spots.
