Question:

Festival help for a new festival-goer, please?

I wanna go to a festival next year, but being a festival n00b, I have no idea about anything. Is it best to go with one friend or tons of friends. I don't know if any of my friends would be willing to go with me ''/ Is it better to take a bigger size tent than what you need?!

What about tent thefts? That worries me alot, too. I mean, I have experience with camping, from being a Scout, but obv you don't have to worry about anything on Scout camps.

Please give some helpful advice! Thanks!!

  1. the first festival i went to was 2007 (and is still the only one so far) and i hadn't even been camping before! lol

i think going with more people is probably better (i went with 2 though) because that way there is less chance of you ending up being separated from EVERYONE for a long time, as for tent size, i think it's best to go with whatever you prefer, if you are happy and comfortable in a small tent then go for it

as for tent thefts, i was fortunate enough to not have anyone take anything from mine but the best advice i can think of to give you there is that you definitely shouldn't take anything of value that you dont absolutely NEED and don't leave them unattended in your tent and try to keep money on you at all times

good luck and have fun :D

  2. Festivals are great! Some people go to fests with a large group of people, others go with one or two friends and some people go by themselves! You will have a great time either way. Even if you don't know too many people you will make friends there! Everyone is so friendly and so happy to be there!

Tent thefts happen, but I've been to a lot of festivals and have never had that happen. Just use common sense. Lock any valubles you have in your car and don't leave anything out in the open.

Check out infobury.com, it is a message board about the Rothbury Music Festival.

  3. If you are 18 by the time next May comes up you can apply to be an Oxfam festival steward. They get security guarded camping, food vouchers, the cleanest loos, hottest showers with the tastiest and best value veggie food on site.  The campsite is the safest there, you will be as safe as you can ever be at a festival as a steward, you needn't worry about tent theft.  You will have to pay a bond of £160.00 when you register in March but that carries over from festival to festival and you get it back when you have done the festival(s). Life as a steward is very good, you will have to do 3 x 8 hour shifts over the course of a weekend, coffee and tea is free for all stewards and the loos are cleaned regularly.

All stewards are very welcoming to all newbs, you will not lack for people to talk to and will make more friends that you might think would be impossible impossible for such a short space of time. You can see on the site what is required of a steward, if you want to go to Glastonbury next year you will have to get in quick, the places go like greased lightning, they are very popular. It is not a guarantee that you will see the bands you like, but you can swap shifts if someone else has the shift patterns to swap that enable you to catch the acts you are interested in.
