my son today has been running a fever between 98.4 and 102.4 iv treated it with both motrin and then Tylenol 6hrs later and also a cool bath. he has been drinking pedalight and sucking on a Popsicle today. all he has been doing is laying down or sleeping when hes not drinking.

what else can i do and when should i take him to the doctors or a er visit or the after hours clinic .

i have already called the doctors three times today about this and they just told me it was a virus and to do fever control.

  1. A fever usually means there is something not right in the body. Keep monitoring him, and, if his fever does not break, take him to the clinic. It's better to nip it in the bud if you can. Some doctors do not like to give medication a lot, but sometimes medication is the only thing that works.

  3. You are doing all the right things.  Just keep him hydrated, keep him comfortable, and keep up with the fever breaking techniques.  Sleeping is good for him, its how their little bodies fight the infection. If you have a hard time waking him up though and he is completely lethargic, get him in to the doctor.

Anytime my daughter has had a fever both the doctor and the ER have said that a fever needs to be seen at the ER only if it reaches 105, or if it lasts more than 5 days.  Personally though, I always have her seen if it goes to or over 104.  I'm too nervous at that point to wait.
