Feyenoord Rotterdam’s Jon Dahl Tomasson announces retirement – Dutch Eredivisie news
Reports from Feijenoord Stadion confirm that Feyenoord Rotterdam’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jon-Dahl-Tomasson-c18949 has decided to end his footballing career as a player. The Dutch veteran will now step into the world of coaching.
The 34-year-old was forced to take this decision after struggling frequently with long-term injuries and admitted that it was the only reason behind his early retirement. The former Danish International, regarded as one of the best Danish strikers of modern
era, believes that there was uncertainty over his ability to play at the top level, and this decided to call it a day. However, he has no regrets in taking the decision.
The former striker, who could also play as an attacking midfielder position, started his career in 1992/93 season with Koge BK. The 34-year-old broke a plethora of records in his two-decade career with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Feyenoord-c39258 Rotterdam and AC Milan. He
played in all the top European leagues including English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and Dutch Eredivisie, taking his career http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Total-c40747 club appearances to 450, from which he netted 180 goals.
Tomasson was understandably emotional following the announcement and admitted that it is the most difficult decision to make in a footballer’s career.
“It's a sad day. I made the decision to quit playing football. Everyone who played football knows this is the most beautiful profession, but when I see the guys preparing for a match, and I can't play, it hurts”, Tomasson said.
The 34-year-old looked back at his career and admitted that he had enjoyed everything and won silverware with almost every club.
“I had a beautiful career. I've won the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord and the Champions League with AC Milan. I've seen a lot, I visited a lot of countries. You can only dream of these things, but I did it”, he added.
The heavily travelled Danish legend still harbours fondness for the game and will pursue a career in coaching. The 34-year-old revealed that he would be joining Eredivisie outfit SBV Excelsior’s coaching staff and admitted that he has a lot to learn in this
trade.
“I will join the staff of Excelsior. I have to learn a lot, but on the other side, I've a lot of experience as a football player”, Tomosson concluded.
The former Danish International was unarguably one of the best players ever to emerge from Denmark. His dream to pursue a managerial career could certainly materialize and one can only wish Tomasson the best of luck with his coaching career.
