I have purchased a Monster Standard Fiber Optic Audio Cable to connect my Comcast Motorola HD DVR and Cable box to my olevia 542i. I connect the two and only get a sound when the standard red and white audio cables are connected...how do I get this to work and do I also have to have the coax audio connected?? Please help, I am very connection illiterate.

  1. You wasted your money buying monster cable, but thats a side issue.

you must configure your DVR to send digital audio out,its in the settings somewhere.

  2. There has to be an option on your DVR to switch from linear pcm to Fiber optic sound. I don't think it will allow both output to transmit at the same time. Also check your olevia 542 setups.

  3. Digital audio cables must be connected to all of the devices in the chain. I am not sure if you already did that or not. Also, if you are going to use fiber optic cables, you can ONLY use fiber optic cables. You cannot change between one and the other. Some systems will only recognize digital OR analog at one time, so you may have to disconnect the RCA plugs (red/white) for this to work. You may also have to specifically select digital audio in the menu of your TV Cable Set Top Box. Also, you will have to make sure that your audio receiver is set to DIGITAL, PCM, or whatever term your manufacturer uses. Look in the manual to see what button you need to select in order to change the input to digital. You will be able to see if the system is transmitting a digital signal because an unplugged end of the cable will glow red on the end. If you need more help after referring to your manual, email me and maybe include a picture of the back of your system and your cables to give a better idea of what you are working with.

  4. I must first say it amazes me how people(spectre)act like they know what theyre talking about here and have no clue! the digital audio ports on a tv are OUTPUT only! your cablebox digital audio is OUTPUT only! you cant hook up an output to another output. the digital audio ports on your tv are there specifically for people using an antenna to get their hd programming over the air. if you had (or have) a home theatre system and were using an antenna for hd you would connect from the tv optical out to your receiver optical in for 5.1 audio.  tvs only have two speakers so stick with the stereo audio cables (red&white) and activate the tvs internal simulated surround sound in the tvs audio menu. either take the optical cable back or save it for when you buy a ht system you will need it then.
