Question:

Fiber optic Internet cable?

I recently switched my broadband provider to upgrade my internet speed from 2mb to 15mb speed

After receiving my new modem i found my top speed getting only about 3-4 mb/sec?? I rang my internet provider and they told me my lines aren't strong enough and I could only get up to 6mb/sec speed.

After a bit of reseach I discovered our road has had fiber optical cables laid down after our house was built.

Do i need to change every phone line in my house and up to the road to avail the 15mb/sec connection???

  1. Rubbish isn't it!

  2. you are being scammed.  how can they sell you something and not give it to you?

  3. Actually it would help if you said what ISP it is and where you are, because your details are totally confusing because you are talking about two different things. Fibre optics don't use phone lines, it is a dedicated system. And what do you mean by "my lines aren't strong enough", that doesn't mean a thing!

Virgin Media are the only company in the UK that use fibre optic technology and they don't do 15 Mb. They only do 2 Mb, 4 Mb which is being upgraded to 10 Mb by the summer, 20 Mb and 50 Mb will not be on line for another 18 months.

Also fibre optics near enough deliver what speed you are paying for. I'm on 4 Mb at the moment and my download speed is a constant average of 3,900+ Kbps when I ping my system.

  4. all internet is like that, it's 'upto 15mb not 15mb'

to get fiberoptic they will charge you a initial charge to equip your house with the fiberoptic line.

  5. They sort of have misleading advertising (Virgin Media i'm guessing). They only implement the fibre optic lines up TO the end user, not FOR the end user. In other words you're still using old copper cables to transmit information; its meant to be faster just because they arent using copper cables up to end users no more.

  6. First you need to rob an offshore bank.  Fiber optic cables are expensive to install.  They are usually only used by large networks.  I don't remember ever hearing anyone flip for fiber cables to download faster in the home.
