  1. If it has a layer of paint on it why not. The pan could be replaced but keep in mind that it is the first thing installed in a shower.

  2. Rough it up a little with an orbital sander. Get a good epoxy coating- more like industrial strength stuff. A new pan would be better but showers are built from the bottom up, for water proofing so it would be difficult to replace without removing a course or two of tile, not to mention glasswork if any.

  3. As far as i know the major cost of a shower is the doors and the plumbing, the pan is cheap enough to replace. That is what I would do rather than fix it at the risk of not looking good.

  4. When u mention epoxy, i guessing it is the type used in marine applications e.g. timber on boats.

Epoxy, or epoxy resin,  is applied to boats to provide a water proof barrier for its timber. Eventually the epoxy will deteriorate from water, sun and salt.  When this occurs the process is to prepare the surface correctly for re-application of epoxy resin.

Sand with a wet and dry sand paper. Try starting with a wet and dry 400 grit paper, for roughing out pits, dents and scratches. Repeatedly dip the paper in a tub of water  while sanding , then sand with a 800 grit wet and dry paper ( a finer paper ) with water until the surface is smooth and scratch free.  Clean and dry the area thoroughly ( use some metho to remove any detergents or oils ).

Viola  ...   your surface is ready to be epoxied.

If you plan on purchasing a new shower screen, and im guessing the walls arent to flash either, sometimes its better to spend an extra $1500 and get a new shower base and the walls redone.  A shower base normally can not be removed without damaging the walls due to a water lip on the base, hence having to do the lot.

From experience, a new shower screen with old base and walls never feels satisfying, most people feel they wasted their money on the shower screen and regret not doing it properly the first time.

I always encourage clients to redo the lot at once, especially if you plan to live there for a while.  In a rental situation i feel its the same.  If you have a dark dingee mouldy bathroom you only attract the same to use it.

  5. Yes you can I did mine last week and it came out great the trick is to make sure the epoxy is put on a smooth surface Good Luck
