I am putting in an EQ into my 97 sunfire. I have a spot under my HVAC controls but its not wide enough. I would like to cut it wider to fit the EQ in there and make a base and a top out of MDF cut to size so it wont flop around in there then take a peice of 1/4 inch MDF and build a front cover. I would like to finish it in fiberglass but Im not sure how to. I just need to cover it in fiberglass, so do I need to use wax since what Im fiberglass will stay fiberglassed? I dont know if Im being clear enough to get a response. Someone help me out

  1. Before you start cutting, make sure that there are no structural bars inside that part of the center console, you may find the whole thing flops around after yo cut the console.  i get what you want to do, and it is certainly do-able, no you dont want to use wax, but you do need something for the fiberglass resin to stick to, and it wont stick to MDF, so what you need to do is make your frame out of MDF, and then go buy some Fleece, like in a fleece blanket, or an old sweatshirt, turn it so the fuzzy side is out, and staple it to the MDF, use the fleece to create the curves and contouring that you want, then you will paint the fleece with a coat of fiberglass resin, then lay down a layer of fiberglass mesh, followed by more resin, being sure to fully saturate the mesh with resin, and cover the fleece entirely, and blend into the existing dash, you want to repeat theis with at least 3 layers to give it strength.  let the resins cure, then go to town sanding it down smooth(wear a mask, that stuff is nasty) then you can paint it to match, and lay down a layer of clearcoat over the top.  Good Luck
