Fichman/Sun drown Kisialeva/Rossi to win the doubles title – Challenger of Granby 2011
Starting the tournament as the top seeded pair, the combination of Sharon Fichman of Canada and Shengnan Sun of China won the doubles title at the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby, by defeating the duo of Viktoryia Kisialeva
of Belarus and Nathalia Rossi from Brazil in the final on Saturday afternoon.
The contest was featured on the hard courts of Granby, Canada, with the top seeded team having no difficulty at all to bag the doubles crown at the ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournament. Fichman and Sun took just 63
minutes of play to wrap up straight sets victory at 6-4, 6-2, to win the first edition of Challenger of Granby women’s doubles championship.
Kisialeva and Rossi have been in brilliant form throughout the tournament and made a huge upset in the semi-finals by defeating the second seeded American duo to reach the final. They failed to replicate the similar performance
as they did just one day ago and crumbled in the second set to let Fichman and Sun away with the championship victory.
The top seeded pair was phenomenal with its serve throughout the contest and made the most out of it. Fichman and Sun delivered 80 per cent serve on target and secured 16 first serve points in the opening set to get a ballistic
start in the competition. Kisialeva and Rossi were off to an aggressive start as well but they both lost their steam in the later parts of the contest to finish on the losing side in the end.
Fichman and Sun drew the first blood in the third game, breaking to a 2-1 lead but their opponents retaliated immediately to fritter away their advantage with a serve break. The opener was evenly poised at 4-4 when the top seeded
duo made its crucial move to register a second serve break, which proved decisive. Fichman and Sun clinched the opener at 6-4 to get one up in the contest and carried on their winning impetus in the following set as well.
Fichman and Sun proved even merciless in the next set and launched a series of forays upon their competitors with their 86 per cent precise first serve. The top seeded pair stung two consecutive serve breaks to rocket away to victory,
with Kisialeva and Rossi poorly failing to get even closer to a break point. Fichman and Sun closed out the contest at 6-2 to bag the championship title at the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby.
