Fiddlers Patriot will contest in the Cannon Shell Stakes after a long layoff
The 6-year-old gelding Fiddlers Patriot hasn’t run a single race in seven months, and his return will be closely followed in the $85,000 Cannon Shell Stakes, which could pace as a graded stakes event. The six furlong sprint will be held over the Belmont
Park’s turf course on 16 May, 2012, where 13, 3-year-old and above colts and geldings will be contesting.
Trained by Allen Jerkens for owner Irving M. Cowan, Shintoh, the Irish invader will be making his debut in the Cannon Shell Stakes, and he too hasn’t run since 16 October, 2010, and that was in the Navigation Stakes, when he finished fifth in the 1 1/16
mile race at Cork’s turf course.
Owned by James F. Olson in partnership with R. A. Hill Stable, Fiddlers Patriot was last seen in action at Woodbine race course, going 6 furlongs trying to run down the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner, Regally Ready, but he finished 5th on the
day in the Grade 1 Nearctic Stakes.
Fox Ridge Farm’s Yield Bogey, who is also entered in the Cannon Shell Stakes, was a part of the Nearctic Stakes doing the same what Fiddlers Patriot was trying to do, but in vain, as he finished way back in 12th on 16 October, 2011.
The 8-year-old gelded son of Langfuhr, Yield Bogey hasn’t won a race since 25 June, 2010, though he came close in the Grade 3 Jaipur Stakes in the same season, and again in the same Jaipur Stakes in his second race of the 2011 season.
“He usually needs a race, but last year he had to go long because the short race didn’t go,” trainer Pat Kelly said. “He’s getting a little long in the tooth, so we’re trying to get him back in action. Hopefully, we’re on the grass and it’s not too soft.”
Bred in New York by Fiddlers Green Stable, the son of Proud Citizen, Fiddlers Patriot has never won a stakes race, and the closes he came to winning a stakes race was in 2011 on 26 June, when he finished second to winner Signature Red in the Highlander Stakes.
