Field hockey try-out preparing?

i've been playing field hockey for like 4 years now.

and im about to go into 7th grade in our school and we can do field hockey in 7th. and i heard that running really prepares you. all these years ive been playing for youth leages. and now i need to know some exercises that could help me prepare for try outs

and also if running helps, which im sure does, how long?

and i need other exercise ideas too.

  1. You're right, running is a good idea.  But as a field hockey player, you will not be doing long-distance running, but short sprints, then a quick break, then another sprint.  Therefore, sprinting is going to be a lot more effective than long-distance running.

    Skills are just as important though, and you'll need to work on general skills as well as skills specific to your position.  All positions need to know how to hit, push, slap-hit, trap, tackle, mark, drag, use the reverse side of the stick, and move with the ball.  Also, Defenders (full-backs and half-backs) need to have a strong tackle and good stop, Midfield players (half-backs and inners) need to be fast, good at channelling the opposition (making them go where you want them to), and strong markers, and attackers (centre-half, wings and centre-forward) should know how to flick (raise the ball), and how to run with the ball and eliminate opponents.
